In the year 1876, the first
European settlers came to our area. Charles Adair is named as the
first to arrive in future Polk County along with his family,
and nine others soon followed. These families composed what
was known as the Rosebud

settlement, located just south of modern-day Fosston.
The first
logging camp in the area came into being in the mid-1880s, and with it
came many new jobs. As the area around the timberland grew, the need
for a new town became increasingly clear.
The credit for this town
goes to W.J. Hilligoss, who chose the area and purchased the town site
in January 1884. This particular spot was unbroken prairie just at the
east edge of the logging camp.
Hilligoss saw to it that a newspaper and a post office were quickly
established in the new town. While registering the post office, he
gave the town the name of Fosston. |
