In the year 1876, the first European settlers came to our area. Charles Adair is named as the first to arrive in future Polk County along with his family, and nine others soon followed. These families composed what was known as the Rosebud settlement, located just south of modern-day Fosston.
The first logging camp in the area came into being in the mid-1880s, and with it came many new jobs. As the area around the timberland grew, the need for a new town became increasingly clear. The credit for this town goes to W.J. Hilligoss, who chose the area and purchased the town site in January 1884.

This particular spot was unbroken prairie just at the east edge of the logging camp. Hilligoss saw to it that a newspaper and a post office were quickly established in the new town. While registering the post office, he gave the town the name of Fosston.
Fosston's average summer high reaches 79 degrees in late July, with the average winter low hitting -9 degrees in January. Rain is most prevalent in the summer, when it averages 3.6 inches a month. Monthly snowfall averages 7.8 inches between November and March.
Magelssen Elementary School and Fosston Secondary School Provide public education to students of all grades from pre-school up to grade 12. Bemidji State University, Northwest Technical College at Bemidji, Minnesota State University at Moorhead and Concordia College at Moorhead offer secondary education within an hour's drive.
First Care Medical Services provides health care to the immediate vicinity. Mahnomen Health Center is another option only 20 miles from town.
Fosston is uniquely situated at the junction of Minnesota's pine forests and her tallgrass prairies. With less than a 60-minute drive, you can visit 2 large state forests, 2 wildlife refuges, 28 fishing lakes and almost 24,000 acres of public hunting land. The numerous outdoor areas offer opportunities for snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, horseback riding, golfing or bird-watching.
Located alongside a beautiful lake, the Fosston Golf Club supplies lovely natural scenery as you supply your enthusiasm for the game. 9 beautiful holes are set on a lush bluegrass course.
Just 30 minutes away you'll find Wildwood Farms in Gonvick. Wildwood serves up homemade maple syrup, maple cream and delicious maple fudge sure to appeal to everyone with a sweet tooth.
